MG MGF Technical - Temperature Gauge

Hi Folks,

My temp gauge has been somewhat unreliable since changing the thermostat some months ago, it has now pretty much stopped working altogether.

Given the fragility of the cooling system I’d like to get this sorted ASAP. For interest, I believe the system is operating correctly, the heater works and the fans come on when you’d expect, I’m just not getting a reading on the gauge (or a very slight one, up to the 1st mark etc).

What is the best method for isolating the issue, is it likely to be at the engine side, gauge, or connections in between. I suspect something engine side was damaged or disturbed when I replaced the thermostat, but am open to other ideas.

Thanks, Russ.

I'm no expert but it sounds like a bubble of trapped air, perhaps released from elsewhere since the previous bleeding. As a minimal intrusion how about just releasing the sensor unit a few turns to see if either air gets released and/or it reseats properly?

First tool I'd use is electrical contact spray on the temp gauge sensor connections - for it to be fine before and now suspect, a dicky connection is fairly likely to be the cause. If that doesn't work, a new sensor isn't expensive and worth replacing as a matter of course anyway, they have a much shorter lifespan than ideal and the spurious readings a dying one can give has been known to cause many a mild coronary ;o)
