MG MGF Technical - Stuck in 1st
| Anyone know how I fix the link between the gear stick and the gearbox? Is it easily got to? Can a novice fix it? |

| 3 causes: clip at gear lever end of cable has dropped out - fiddly to replace, but very cheap. broken cable broken gear cable - about two days labour and new cables are difficult to obtain at times and very fiddly to fit. roll pin holding the bell crank in place has come out - cheap and simple to fix. To check which problem is yours, start at the gearlever first. Loosen the trim around the gearlever and check the outer gear cable covers are fixed to the housing with a U-shaped clips each, by waggling the gear stick and spotting what moves in sympathy. To check which problem is yours, prop up the rear of the car so you can get right underneath the gearbox then get some-one to waggle the gearlever while you check the movement is transferred to the gearbox shaft. For full intructions with pictures, google "mg"+"dieter", then search Dieter's website for "snapped gear selection cables" If a cable has broken, you might as well save yourself a lot of future pai by replacing both at the same time.
