MG MGF Technical - Starting problems
Hi People, Went to start my car the other day and when I turned the key all the lights came on as normal but it wouldn't start. No noises or anything just wouldn't start. Turned the key a few times and then it started, seemed fine for the next few days and then the same thing happened today twice and this time it took more turns of the key to get it started. Any ideas? Thanks in advance. Jeff

Either the ignition switch itself, or much more likely to be corrosion on the solenoid terminal on the starter motor. This can usually be easily cleaned and fully repaired. Also check your engine earth strap for good continuity as this would give the same symptoms.

In the current climate of rain, rain & more rain, damp will be a prime suspect. As Charles says, the solenoid that switches the current to the starter motor is a common issue, either through a flakey connection or possibly having formed slight corrosion on the internals causing it to 'stick'. Next time it refuses to respond, try rocking the car. If the next key turn results in correct operation, stickiness of the solenoid is the more likely. This will often heal itself just through regular use, although Charles' suggestion of cleaning the terminals & earth strap would still be a good idea, just to be sure the solenoid is getting an un-restricted power supply.
