MG MGF Technical - Starter prolem
Hi all, got a problem after changing the battery after a long lay up. Although the old battery had been charged occaisionly, it was'nt in good enough condition to turn the motor over. Put a new battery on it and the alarm went off immediatley, managed to cancel that with fob after several atttempts(perhaps re-synchronised the fob)but now ,the starter motor wont go at all. The alrm immobiliser appears to work normally, remotely locks and unlocks( the lock motor does make a bit of a fuss locking)the led seems to operate normally, switching the ignition on brings on the led, pressing the fob cancels it and the buzzer, but engine doe'nt turn over. There's no sound out of the starter solenoid, so I dont think it a dirty battery connection, it seems as though the immobiliser is still active. I put a new battery on the car about 5 years ago without a problem.Any advice to solve this would be much appreciated. Mike

Things to try: 1) disable immobiliser, you can do this using your key in the drivers-side lock; instructions in the owner's handbook. 2) the spade connector to the solenoid is worth trying; you can just about reach this from the "boot" if you take the grille off - just pulling off and pushing back on might well be enough to make a better connection (worked for me last time I had starting problems). there are more detailed explanations of this in the archive.

Thanks Chris, waggled the wiring on the solenoid and hey presto. Just got the door lock to cure now, I ve one on Ebay for a later year (2002)b than my '99, wondering if they are compatable. Cheers Mike
