MG MGF Technical - squeak/ squeal on starting and reversing

Can any one help! I have load squeak and squealing on start up in the morning especially in reverse, but the noise dos appear to disappear after an while when i move off? apears to be at its worse in reverse.

Hi Tessa,
It's most probably either
the alternator drive belt, if it squeals when you rev it up ( without moving ) and sqeals worse with the lights and fans on, this is because it's slack and slipping & the alternator has a heavy load on it trying to recharge the battery just after starting
or
it's the brake pads worn out and grinding on the disc then as the car starts running the pads bear off a little and there's no more noise - does it sound rough from somewhere when braking and maybe you feel the brakes are not quite right ?
Any idea when the brakes were last replaced ?,

The first one needs doing within a few days - or the battery will go flat, the second one needs doing pronto.

It could also be something silly like a stick or stone in between the brake disc and the shield, but check the first two and post again.

PS: lights and fan are note on when this happens, but it is always when you first start her up!
