MG MGF Technical - Speedo and power steering failed

I have fixed both problems by replacing just the gearbox section of the three piece speedo cable. The inner cable had sheared three inches in from the gearbox drive. Here's some interesting observations for others to note:

Most MK1 MGF's have a a three section speedo cable, the longest run is under the car. This middle section is sensed by the EPAS ECU which decreases the power assistance in line with an increase in speed. Therefore if there is no EPAS and no speedo the problem is in either of the gearbox section cable or the long centre section. If EPAS is working but no speedo, the problem is likely to be in the speedo cable section or the speedo itself.

I discovered this after replacing the gearbox section; EPAS returned, but still had no speedo. I'd decoupled the speedo cable end and forgotten to reconnect it!

Thanks Jeff. The cable always seems to fail here. Perhaps the angle of the cable is a bit too extreme and places too much strain on the inner cable??

yes this happened to me managed to get inner cable off scrap car

To help avoid the problem from happening again, I removed all inner cables and greased them with white LM before rethreading them into their outers. In addition, the gearbox end cable was rerouted to avoid tight bends. Speedo needle is now steady at all speeds - it had a tendency to wobble in the past.
