MG MGF Technical - smoke problem
| Started car after six days and experienced a strange noise and thump from the engine bay.Battery flat but turned out to be the starter motor which had fractured but retrieved broken part. Now fixed but runs rough sometimes and emits light blue smoke that smells like almonds. No loss of power but has a slight tapping noise and appears hot in the engine bay although temperature gauge indicates all is well. Head gasket changed 16000miles ago and has 38000 on clock and is on a w plate. Would appreciate any help as I am now desperate to fix. No problems prior to starter motor cracking. Have considered coil, timing, sticking valve but am at a loss as to where to start looking. |

| VVC or MPi? Either way, I can't think of anything in the vicinity of the starter motor that could impact on fuelling/ignition/valvegear, so probably best to presume the two faults to be coincidental. If the timing belt had jumped, the rough running I'd expect to be constant not intermittent. HT leads are probably more likely suspects than the coil IMHO, perhaps worth checking for a spark on all 4 when it's misfiring. As for the blue smoke, that's curious... a sticking valve I agree could be the culprit, the obvious detection method is with a compression tester. Feasible I guess that a stuck valve overloaded the starter and caused it to break its mountings..? Doesn't explain the intermittency of the rough running though. Hmm Not much help I suspect... |
