MG MGF Technical - Serious knocking sound from engine..

Folks

After 12 years and 103,000 miles of relatively trouble free motoring the MG has developed a serious knocking sound. This is not the usual VVC tapping but something more sinister. Sounds more top end than bottom. Anyone have any ideas before I take it to the garage. No noticable loss of power, misfire or running problems but is is waking the neighbours first thing in the morning...
