MG MGF Technical - Reversing Lights not working
Hi All, Both bulbs are OK, so I figured it must be the switch on the gearbox (if that is where it lives?). Anyway, where is the switch for the reversing lights located and what is the best way to access it? Many thanks, Timmeh

Hi, it is on the passenger side of the gearbox. The best way to access it is from underneath as you do not have to remove the engine cover etc. Not even sure if it is accessable from the top. Only problem there is you will have to get the back of the car up in the air on ramps or a lift. There are 2 wires that go to plugs just above it. The new switch may/maynot have a washer on it so you may need the old one or buy a new one. Hope that helps Brian

I've got the same issue (on a 98 F) so I'm interested to see what you find. Steve

Hi again, just been under my 97F to check if what I told you was correct. The switch is passenger side of the car, on the front of the Gear box about 4 inches up. you can identify it by the wires coming out of it and going upwards. If you open the boot and remove the grid (by lifting at the front) that covers the dipstick etc, you can see, with a torch, where the wires plug in. You can with difficulty pull the two wires loose, but it is far easier if you remove the engine cover under the parcel shelf behind the seats. After removing the wires, pull them down under the car and loosen the switch with a spanner. On refitting the new switch you occationally find that the lights stay on in all gears. This is because the spacer washer has been compressed and is causing the switch to engage. This is cured by fitting a new spacer washer. Do not over tighten the new switch into the gearbox. (Don't know the exact Torx setting)Push the wires back up and connect them to the plug. As I said, it is possible to do from the boot, but it is quite difficult as very tight for space. Also make sure the engine is cold, as doing it without removing the engine cover, you may inadvertantly burn yourself. Hope that makes sence Brian

Thanks all. Fuse was OK BTW (brake lights work off same fuse) and on Saturday morning they all worked?!? Baffled I was~ must've been a sticky switch, so I'll keep an eye on it. Much obliged to all.
