MG MGF Technical - Retrofit Power Assisted Steering

In case anyone is interested it is easy to retrofit an EPAS steering column in place of a manual steering column

I checked the car before starting and on my 1996 MPI all the wiring was in place apart from the battery to additional fuse box wiring and the electronic steering control box was even in place above the glove locker even though the car was sold ( when new ) as a non assisted steering car

It took me an afteroon to remove the original steering column and replace it with a powered EPAS column and one of the hardest bits was removing the existing steering lock assembly - by drilling out the bolts and fitting the lock to the new column with new shear bolts

Incidently I got the EPAS column from MGBreaker who gave excellent next day service at a competitive price

The only bit of wiring missing on my car was from the battery via the 40 amp fuse to the existing wiring which was tucked behind the harness running by the battery. I put a blade fuse in a plastic box to wire it up though I am sure one could get the official wiring from a breaker

So dont believe any one who tells you you cannot fix powered assisted steering to a non powered assisted steering car - it is relatively easy

I appreciate when MG Rover fitted powered steering they fitted a slightly faster rack so I could also change the rack if I wanted ( or change it to a TF rack ) but it is now much lighter to drive

If anyone wants more details let me know

Your car had the EPAS ECU fitted even though it didn't have EPAS??? That's very very odd - and am pretty sure that isn't usual... But if the wiring loom is all there, replacing with EPAS steering column (very easy as you say) and fitting the ECU is going to make a very straightforward upgrade on a non-EPAS car.

Thanks for the info Chris - great work! :o)
