MG MGF Technical - Rear Screen
| Ok so I just got the old 'F' out of the garage after a long winter sleep.(the car, not me) I dropped the hood and then put it back up, the rear screen has split in two places :o( I know that I will have to replace the screen, and there seems to be plenty for sale on e-bay (unless you know where I can get them cheaper) Are they relatively easy to replace? I don't suppose that it is covered under the windscreen policy on my insurance...or is it? Bob |

| Depends on your insurance policy - but many companies don't, or will ask you to pay an excess. Replacement of the rear screen is not too difficult - and there's a how-to here: http://mgf.ultimatemg.com/group2/DIY/exterior/hood/rear_screen/index.htm There are also a number of specialists around the country that can undertake the work for very reasonable money - and certainly worth considering. Have a look on the archives for a number of recommendations :o) Of course, now is also the time to consider replacing the plastic with a glass rear screen... might cost a little more, but should be permanent and it also benefits from a de-misting element and much improved clarity :o) |

| I've got a spare plastic screen from a black hood for sale for £30 plus postage if you're interested? It's used and has a few light surface scratches and is a little cloudy but will clean up very well with some Greygate (can probably do before sale if you want). tim dot jenner at gmail dot com. | Thanks for the offer tim, but I think I will buy a new one, hopefully it will last for a good fews years. Rob Thanks for the info. One question....How can I replace the plastic with a glass screen? Can't see how that would work with a folding hood! Or am I just being a bit thick? Bob |

| Not being thick at all - the newer glass-rear screens are actually not as tall as the OEM plastic so that it stows on the parcel shelf when the hood is stowed. It's a refinement in the MY2005 MG TF, and since has been replicated for aftermarket sale. BAS Hoods is the OEM supplier who can provide replacements, and MGF Mania I gather also retail the glass rear screen replacements. In fact, I think that the majority of MGF specialists will provide this service. Don't worry about the glass screen being smaller than the original - the clarity of the glass compared to the plastic actually means that the rearward view is better! |
