MG MGF Technical - Rear End Throw/wobble
Driving on the Motorway recently I experienced worrying wobble from rear end. Jacking up car has shown wheel rocks from top to bottom, retorq hub nut to 210nm and after a 100 miles same problem, bearing and hub was replaced 25,000 miles ago, how can i tell if the hub needs replacing or just the bearing. Many thanks for your help. Paul Smith

A collapsed bearing is more likely to damage the drive flange, i.e. the casting with the wheel studs in it, than the hub, when the inner race breaks its casing and chews into the shaft. Re-torquing the nut unfortunately is likely to make the situation worse 8-/ If the bearing has separated, which you'll only discover by unbolting the hub assembly, then the drive flange will almost certainly have sustained damage and need replacing. In my experience the hub is usually ok, but when you press the outer race out you'll be able to see if there's any damage. Try JRT Automotive http://www.jrt-automotive.co.uk/ for drive flange & bearing.

Thanks for your advice, will investigate.

I agree with Bandit - very likely to be the rear wheel bearings; they're on the limit on the MGF/TF - they are only originally designed for the Metro! Before going down that route, consider too the ball joints and rod ends, as these also wear and can give the wobble problem you describe.

I seem to have a similaar problem to that you are describing i.e. rear end wander. However mine has just occurred on my last outing a 250 mile day out. On our way home the car started to wander under power. I checked tyre pressures and tried to feel for bearing wear, pressures OK and couldnt move the wheel while standing but havent checked properly. I have been out again today and noticed it again spasmodically. I have Toyo tyres fitted 5000 miles ago and no previous experience of the problem. Any further ideas on this subject would be welcome as I have lost my confidence in the handling which has been excellent up to now.
