MG MGF Technical - Poly Bushes and Wishbones
| Both my wishbones have rusted through on the top surface, and I have replacements that are good secondhand with old bushes - hence the need to get them out. I've replaced with Poly bushes from http://www.floflex.co.uk - which fit without problems as they are in halves, unlike the original one piece rubber bushes. Their kit is complete, except for the damper bushes, but I am told these will be available within a few days. Here's a DIY idea I've used for removing wishbone bushes. A 46mm socket (see my thread about upper ball joint thread) also works as a "receiver" when removing original wishbone rubber bushes - the "sender" being a G cramp. 1) Put G cramp's screw end onto the outside face of the metal bush, the 46mm socket on the inside of the bush housing and the fixed end of the G clamp after that. 2)Tighten the G cramp to force the metal bush towards the cntre of the wishbone and it feeds into the 46mm socket, bringing the rubber bush with it. 3)After a while, screwing the clamp gets difficult because a fair bit of the wishbone bush has popped through and filled the receiving 46mm socket. 4)Dismantle the rig, and bash the rest of the metal+bush through with a hammer and drift (I used an old screw driver with the it's big flat bade ground to a taper). As the rubber edge if the bush is no longer holding onto the edge of the wishbone, just a few thumps are needed to complete the job! Cleaned the wishbones up and waxoyled inside and out - which also makes a great lube for the PU bushes. Also used plenty of copper slip onto the pivot bolts that hold the wishbones to subframe. These are a s.o.b to line up with bush and subframe holes when refitting, but I guess there's no easy way, just trial and error - with the aid of levers, rubber mallet and plain old persistence. All the above was achieved by adopting the ancient DIY problem solving technique:- 1) It doesn't work. 2) Swear and walk away. 3) Have a beer. 4) Contemplate the problem. 5) Try again. Repeat until you get a result or feel dizzy (then stop and do it another day). Jeff Jeff |
