MG MGF Technical - Oil Pressure Gauge Fitting
| I'm interested in replacing the analogue clock on a 2000 VVC with a suitable oil pressure gauge. Would like to retain the current standard gauge face colour (silver) and lighting (amber) if possible, and willing to change the Oil Temp Gauge to match. I have no doubt that one of you experts has effected this mod already, so grateful for any advice or suggestions as to what is entailed, suppliers etc. Do any of the later models have an oil pressure gauge as standard? Gary. |

| Well, I've certainly thought about it quite a lot, not to mention wasting some time looking for suitable parts! The good news is that the gauges are standard size (52mm), so any aftermarket item should fit. The tricky bit is getting a gauge that has the correct shade of cream and the right type face and illuminates in the right shade of amber. Oh, and it needs also be an electronic gauge (I wouldn't fancy running a capillary pipe of near 2 meters length through the passenger compartment - although it could be done!) When I last looked, the 'Type R' gauges (from Hong Kong) looked the best bet - the colour I think is wrong, but the type face on the numbering is surprisingly close. Just had a quick look on ebay - they're still being listed, and cheaply too! http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/New-52mm-Car-Gauge-Oil-Press-Pressure-Gauge-/260615892777?cmd=ViewItem&pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item3cadeaef29 Can't comment on quality. Back lighting is the wrong colour, but it may be possible to change this (different gel-filter, or if LED, replacing it with an amber one). As mentioned before, face colour is tricky. I guess the closest is magnolia - as used on classic Lucas instruments - but these tend to be mechanical... The answer, I think, is one of these cheap far eastern dials, and a bit of ingenuity! :o) |
