MG MGF Technical - Oil and coolant level...

Hi all,
Had a couple questions I am not sure about. I have a 2001 MGF and have noticed over the last 6 months or so that the coolant level as well as the oil level are slowly going down. I had the second HGF 9 months ago or so. I have topped up the coolant with filtered water and today topped up the oil.

Is this something to be concerned about? Is there anything else I should do?

Thanks
Daniel M

The head gasket is far from being the only gasket that can develop a leak, so no need to assume the worst just yet... Have a look under the car to see if there is a collection of oil on the underside of the engine, if so you'll probably be able to follow the trail back to its source. Coolant loss is a little harder to diagnose due to the tendency to evaporate, but a visual check for coolant-coloured deposits may give clues.

Avoid the temptation to use an additive to try to re-seal the cooling system, e.g. Radweld - it may well appear to do the job, but it can cause severe side-effects too.
