MG MGF Technical - multi shim gasket

When fitting the multi shim gasket and saver shim, does the shim go on the block first or does the head gasket go on followed by the shim. Sorry if I seem dim but I have seen conflicting pictures of the fitting

thats right, but complicated by being upside down! the shim goes on the head and the gasket on the block
