MG MGF Technical - mpi to vvc (1.9 to 3.0 mems)

Any advice please on the complexity of replacing a 1.8 mpi engine (1.9 mems) with a vvc (3.0 mems)

I have a 96F 1.8 mpi and I have a donor engine out of a TF160 incl mems wiring etc.

No tried this - and a lot will depend on the plug compatibility between your current MGF's main wiring loom, and that of the MEMS 3 engine wiring loom that you'll need along with the replacement engine. The main loom connects to the engine loom with four connectors located with the main relays behind the MEMS mounting bracket. Chances are that the two won't mate directly - the MGF/TF wiring system changed in a significant way at least twice up until 2005 - first with the Mk2 MGF (2000MY) and next with the TF in around 2003/04 when the new immobiliser system was brought in.

If you are good at lateral thinking, have access to the necessary wiring diagrams, and are handy with a soldering iron, I think that this should all be pretty straight forward. But it may also be worth considering changing the main wiring loom as well - which is actually less frightening that you might think so long as the whole car's interior is completely removed...

Good luck with this project - and do let us know how you get on!

Rob,
Thanks for the input - I agree the replacement of complete loom looks duating but I will give it a go. I am replacing most of the inerior with the TF interior anyway. My 96F is looking tatty.

I will let you know how I get on. Will be replacing dash, console, seats, carpeting, engine+gearbox, mems, wiring, wiper mech. exhaust possibly 'cos of H2O sensor

You mention changing the dash, this will need to include the instrument pack as the mechanical speedo drive will be no use and the VVC engine has a different warning lamp configuration. You should also fit the TF body braces whilst your doing all this work. Gear change cables also changed on latter cars.
