MG MGF Technical - MGF Lambda sensor

After removing the lambda sensor from the 97 MGF we discovered that the substitute we have is for a 2002 model. Physically it looks like it could be fitted and the electrical connection switched.
Is there any internel difference between these two sensors?

I posted a thread about this in April 2011. See the archives.

The length from threads to sensor tip are the same and the four wires are the same. The differences are the width of the sensor tip and the type of loom connector. I had the inside of the manifold machined out a few mm to allow the later lambda's tip to clear the internal boss and changed the connector to match the engine's wiring loom.

As far as I can tell, the motor operates as it should with either type of lambda fitted.

Incidentally I've recently found a solution to a problem with overfuelling, particularly at slow town speeds. The car was a bit jerky and running lumpy. It just scraped through the annual MOT test - the idling emmissions were reading high. Replacing the water temperature sensor cured the problem. I believe the ECU was incorrectly assuming a cold engine and transmitting "rich" settings to the injectors. If the reason for changing your lambda is to resolve this type of problem, try renewing the "brown" sensor in the hot water outlet at the top of the engine, gearbox end near to the exhaust manifold. Easy job and cheap to do. 19mm ring spanner required.

Hello Jeff,

Many thanks for your comments. Sorry I missed your thread from April when I glanced through the threads
last night. I'll do as you did and also change the temp sensor as the car seems to run a little cold.
