MG MGF Technical - MGF engine removal
| My 97 MGF head gasket failed at 80,000km Oil and water mixed. No overheating. I have stripped the engine down to blok and feel that I need to open the sump to clean the oil water mix out so that the beig ends dont wear prematurely if any water remais there. What I am wondering is how the engine comes out. I have removed the RHS engin mount frame that runs paralell to the chasis and I have taken all but one bolt out of the joint to the bell housing. Is there enough play in the gearbox LH mounts to jack the gearbox RHS up enough to slide the engine out and lift it up through the top? Is the sump mounted using a gasket? |

| To remove the engine you have to remove the whole rear sub-frame and you will only find yourself shearing all the bolts. Instead you can do everything insitu. I've recently stripped my engine, replaced HG, pistons and liners and re-assembled all without removing the engine. To get to the sump you'll need to remove the exhaust and flexi-dowpipe first and then the sump is only held on with about 10-12 bolts and one bush which fixed the engine to the sub-frame. The bush and bolt come off easily, just support the engine on a jack when undoing the bolt through the bush, the engine will only rotate a little bit but it is worth jacking a little. The sump probably won't have a gasket, instead it will have been sealed with a Hylomar sealant. Don't use silicone it must be an anaerobic sealant which is oil soluble, Loctite 574 or similar is recommended. If you have the head off, check the liner heights with a feeler gauge, they should be no less than 4 thou above the block, any lower any the engine will be doomed to failure again. Whilst the sump is off replace the oil rail with the new freelander one, it's only about £35 and a lot stiffer, this is usually used with the multi-layer gasket and shim. Hope this is useful. Tim |
