MG MGF Technical - mgf blowing ECU fuse . . . help!
hi people i have a 1999 vvc mgf that every month continues to throw up new problems the lastest one has got me stumped! i was driving along and all of a sudden my car started spluttering and then completeley cut out i quickley put in third and jumpstarted with the momentum then sitting at the lights the car sounded like it was struggling and had no guts then the rev counter dropped to zero beefore the engine had turned off from this point on i have been unable to restart it i had the aa out to inspect it. and the 30amp ecu fuse keeps blowing everything else works inc radio, alarm, heater, all that stuff however theres no spark at the coil and its blowing the fuse ive been told it could be a short circit. Dose any anyone have any idea what it could be or how i mite fix it any help would be appreciated

I had this some years ago, check that the cable to the lambda sensor isn't melting on the exhaust.... I got through three fuse until I found the problem..... Easy, cheap fix. Tim

Most probably a faulty ignition coil-pack. Disconnect the low tension (thin cables) that has connectors at the coilpack. The 30A still blows when trying to start the engine? If so you have either a cable problem from the ECU or worse the ECU itself. If not, one or both of the coilpacks are short-circuited and has to be replaced. NOTE: Repeated blowing of the 30A fuse could in the end also damage the pass transistors in the ECU ! They are tough, but not indestructable ...For these tests you can momentarly exchange the 30A with something lower,20A would be OK. / Carl.
