MG MGF Technical - MGF alternator belt

Just noticed that my alternator belt on the F has never been changed !!!

It's coming up to ten years so rather than waiting for the next timing belt change - I thought I'd change it this weekend.

Is it easy to do. I assume I don't have to remove the timing belt just to change the alternator belt. ?

Although not a 'complex job' it's a little bit of a pain. The 17mm (? from memory, could be 15mm) bolt which needs to be loosened to slacken the belt is close to the sub-frame so a socket won't fit. A conventional open ended spanner is the next port of call but depending where the flats on the bolt head are it can also be a bit awkward, a cranked spanner will be the best bet if you have one, otherwise it's the bodgers favourite - the mole grip.

Once the big bolt is loose you may imagine that the alternator should swing freely...... it doesn't. Using a mirror you will find an 8mm hex tensioning bolt on the bulkhead side of the alternator, undo this a few turns be careful not to undo it so much it comes out. I actually removed the slotted arm completely for maximum movement. Putting it all back together again is the easy bit....
