MG MGF Technical - MG TF 160 Cooling System
Hello! According to the various descriptions that I have found on the web, there is no 'normal' flow through the coolant expansion chamber. I have a constant stream (hard to describe, but strong enough to reach the middle of the chamber) at all times from cold. And no, there are no signs of HGF...! Should this happen? If not, what is causing it? Mines a MY04 with PRT. Thanks, Neil

Sorry, searched the archives properly and this is normal. Problem is with an unhelful comment ("water isn't actually pumped through the tank") on one of the sites I visited for help in fitting a coolant level sensor. Neil

I don't think that this is particularly abnormal, but might indicate that one of the joggle valves may be stuck open?

Yep, seems to be the one on the left - need to crack open the manual and see if it can be replaced (or indeed if there's any point in doing so - although it must be there for a reason...). N

The jiggle valve can be dismantled to clean the valve seat and stainless ball. The theory is that air/vapour will pass over the ball and into the header tank, the ball being heavy. When water flow lifts the ball it will close off the exit to the valve and stop flow. It doesn't really matter if it passes water as well as air/vapour, as it's all going in the same direction - the suction of the water pump.
