MG MGF Technical - Inside of Clutch housing coated in Oil?
Just removed the gear box (1997 MGF 1.8i)to change the clutch and all the inside of the housing is coated in dirty oil. On removing the clutch there was some on the flywheel, where the clutch touches, but the centre of the flywheel had the usual light rusting. The Clutch pressure plate had no oil on it at all so it seems that the oil is comming from the gearbox side of the housing..**Unless there is some MGF quirk that you know about. So I take it that there is an oil seal near the shaft on the gearbox side and this is where the oil is comming from? Simple Job?? Brian

In my experenece gearbox oil has quite a distinctive smell. One other thought, could it be break fluid mixed with dust/dirt?

Had gear box checked and it was the imput shaft seal. Of course it cannot be changed without removing gearbox being taken apart, so cheaper to fit another one. Done that, hope thats it ha! ha!
