MG MGF Technical - Heating/cooling ventilation MG TF

I have a 2004 mg tf 160 and cannot stop warm to hot air coming through the air vents regardless of where the heating cooling dial is. I have been told that their is a nylon gear and rack along with a cable to adjust heat or cold? If so how do I check to see if a nylon gear or rack tooth has been stripped? I would appreciate any other advice also as to why I have only hot air coming from the vents. Regards Lance

Hi Lance,
I have a 02' TF135 and had the same problem. It sounds like the heater is stuck on. This was because the plastic tube on the heater knob was cracked and it just rotates around the metal shaft which is supposed to open and close the heater valve. I found it an easy fix. Pull out the knob with bull nose pliers (using cardboard between jaws so that you do not damage the plastic knob. Inspect the knob and make sure that you retrieve the metel circlip that may be left behind on the metal shaft in the dash. I ended up using a soldering iron and remelted the plastic shaft splits together and then put the metal circlip back on. The other method is to get some stiff tubing which will fit tightly over the split ends.

Here is a previous thread that explains what to do.

It could also be that the cam attached to the bowden cable has dislocated. This is also an easy fix and I wrote some instructions years ago which can be found on Paul Lathwell's MGF/TF FAQ.

Doh! Made the same mistake again. Paul doesn't seem to have it in the FAQ any more, so here is a pointer to a thread on mg-rover.org where I have put the source for somebody else. Hope it helps
