MG MGF Technical - Heater box seals + aircon...

Hi folks,

I’ve been all over the Archive and Google with this to no avail.

I have a 96 import with air con, and a wet passenger footwell. The air con drain was disconnected, now sorted, but I’m still getting a slight leak from the heater box seals. This would be straightforward if I didn’t have a hoofing great air con unit in the way of the heater box! It only leaks if I inundate the inlet with water, but judging by the sopping state of the felt, it all adds up!

1. Can I get at the seals / remove the box from inside the bonnet? I had a look at this recently when changing the wiper assembly but I think it attaches from inside.

2. Must I remove the air con unit? Will it move far enough out of the way if I release it and it’s hoses, or is it a full removal?

3. Is it possible to bodge sealant in with everything in situ, really not sure I fancy removing that air con if I don’t have to :(

The car is in pieces, so urgent advice would be extremely appreciated!

Thanks, Russ

IIRC the heater fan enclosure is secured by 2 10mm bolts into the bottom, through the underside of the bulkhead panel. Not aware of any other bolting points. Whether it can be removed around the mounting plate for the brake linkage, I'm afraid I couldn't say...

Never waved a spanner at an A/C equipped F so can't offer any more info, sorry.

Not much help other than as confirmation, but workshop manual says you have to remove the evaporator. And that's not a job to do at home by the looks of things!

Thanks guys, I received a comprehensive fix from another forum. Apparently one can firk out the heater box by loosening the brake servo and bits of the air con. I've been recommended to fit a TF heater box, which seems a sensible mod. I have a new glass screen hood going on so wish to eliminate all other leaks, and am wondering if a completely dry F is actually achievable ;)
