MG MGF Technical - Head Gasket & which one?
Hi to everyone. Im now on my second mgf (i stacked the first one) but i have a horrible feeling the head gasket has gone.Sludgy dipstick and stuff. Anyway this is normaly the sort of thing i can do myself but feel pretty unsure with this engine after hearing a few diaster stories. Are they really that bad to do?Any advice would be gratefuly recieved. Also i was told about a multi layered gasket,is that the one to go for? Many thanks Jon (norwich)

It's not the easiest of jobs, but in no way impossible. The multilayer gasket from landrover is more sensitive to differences liner heights, but it is the most recent design

With the Land Rover gasket you will also have to replace the oil ladder, so it is more expensive and more work. We use the standard Rover gasket set and have had no problems or come backs with it. We are so confident that we now offer a 3 year parts and labour warranty on the work (subject to certain conditions). Make sure that you get the head skimmed. We have found that over 90% of the heads that we have sent to be skimmed required some metal to be removed. The shop that we employ for this task uses a lapping machine so that the minimum amount of metal possible is removed.
