MG MGF Technical - Fault Code Reader

I have seen fault code readers available fro post 2001 cars but is there anything available for the early Mk1's? I have a '96 VVC and am fed up with the constant search (and cost) for garages with Testbook. Would be nice to have a simple diagnostic tool sat in the garage (yes i have a multimeter...).
