MG MGF Technical - Exhaust mod for TF 135

Firstly greetings to all the old F'ers back in the UK. I had one of the early 1.8i Jan 96 but reluctantly sold it when we moved to Australia. I have now just purchased a 2003 TF135 and are thinking of carrying out the mod on the exhaust valve flap so that both pipes work. Is this a good mod to do ie will it use more fuel? Is there any gain on power? On my old F I fitted the S P exhaust system which gave the car that real sports car note and also a bit more bhp.
