MG MGF Technical - erratic running failed mot

Re mgf 1.8 1997 Engine will start but runs rough and erratic, when the accelerator is pressed down the engine revs are slow to follow. Failed m.o.t. on quote, ( Exhaust tailpipe not capable of allowing the emission probe to be inserted + car overheats)!!! The engine did not seem over hot to me but there was a strong smell of exhaust fumes. The car had been standing 2-3 months prior to m.o.t
