MG MGF Technical - Engine screaming noise in wet?

Hi all, Am I being paranoid? I have noticed a screaming noise coming from the engine when I have gone through a puddle or wet area, it sounds like a belt slipping, which I assume is a lose fan belt, but I had a Rover 214 with a K series in and the noise was similar and ended up being a cam follower, which resulted in major engine failure... is this likely to be the same on my VVC F? Any comment suggestions welcome. Thanks

Really wouldn't expect a failing cam follower to make that kind of noise, but I can see why you're cautious..!

Pretty sure it will be just the alternator belt slipping, which suggests a. it needs tightening up and b. check the closing panel that separates it from the wheelarch is in place - its primary purpose is to protect the alternator belt from grit & water, but it's not uncommon for them to not be re-fitted after work is done or simply fall out.

AJ,

Im no mechanic but i have just had the same problem fixed on my wifes F. Apparantley the fan belt has 4 rows of teeth on it and three rows were missing. It has now been done and it is sounding a lot better. Hope you get it sorted.

Hi, as every one has said it is the alternator belt slipping. (Doesn't have a fan belt, but it is normal for people to call it this). Only need changing or tightning.

Change it. A disintegrating alternator belt can through debris under the cambelt cover and cause expensive mayhem. It's a cheap service part, so not worth the risk.
