MG MGF Technical - Engine Cuts Out whilst driving?

just bought my 2001 1.8 vvc mgf. All is well (or was), and i have driven it a good few hundred miles with next to no faults...
the problem came a few days ago, i was driving to the shops, the car running as well at it has been, then all of a sudden the battery light started to flicker and the car lost power and stalled whilst moving. I pulled over to the side, a little concerned and tried to restart the ignition which worked perfectly. I assumed all was well, maybe a glitch, but now the battery light is humming on/off, with the car losing power as it gets upto anything over 30mph? I have had a few sugesstions it may be either a faulty battery or alternator, but im not sure which?
If anyone can help?

Bad earth I suspect. Check the engine and battery straps.
