MG MGF Technical - Do fuel tanks leak vapour?

Under the fuel tank are 2 uncovered holes. Does anyone know if even a good tank on 1997 MGF leaks petrol vapour? All joints are tight including pump/sender seal, a hiss is heard from petrol cap upon removal so assume no major leaks but smell of petrol under car by these vent holes. Have now removed carpet etc to expose tank and no sign of any staining just smell of petrol. Do I now change tank for one made in 1999 or do they all smell? any ideas? Thanks, Peter.

Mine are much older and one smells of petrol very occasionally - I quite like it. Have you checked out Dieter's site on how to cure petrol smells, use his site's search engine. There are lots of advisories, but mostly it seems shoddy assembly of the rubber filler tubes - which can be 'relieved' to cure it:

.. it's at topic Benzintank in the menue ;)

Kinked filler tube is one of several, but at a 99 made MGF I'd tend more to a problem with the sealing between tank and passenger compartment room.
It's kind of shredder between the large sheet metal cover and the tank behind the seat that must be sealed with a good line of mastix.

I had this at my 1999 made MGF.

Of course every plastic fuel tank is a bit porous against fuel damp.
That's why they did the two holes below the tank.

However, please see the site and check the red print issues.

Good luck.
Dieter

Many thanks to Charless and Dieter for the above information.I was not certain that the vent holes should be open but Dieter has confirmed that they should and also that all tanks are a bit porous.I shall put all back together with new seals where I have disturbed connections and then add fuel to check for visible leaks, if all is OK then fit all the coverings back. If the tank does have any leaks then I shall have to change it but I will see when fuel is in the tank. Many thanks, Peter.
