MG MGF Technical - Difficult start when hot

Sometimes when the engine is hot it takes several start attempts to start my '96 MGF. It sounds like the engine fires for a second. Then the starter motor disengages with a whirr and I have to release the key and try one or more times until the starter will crank the engine to run.
Anybody else who has experienced the same?

Hi Jon,

I'd check at first the battery conditions, than the starter electric connections and the battery ground wire.

Hi Dieter,
No, the trouble has nothing to do with low battery voltage. The battery is fully charged and the starter motor cranks OK. The trouble is that engine fires for a second so the starter goes out of engagement. This only happens when the engine is hot or the car has been parked in the sun. I think I may be a sensor giving a false signal but can't figure out which one.
