MG MGF Technical - Coolant Leak
| Hi all fellow MGF owners, my F is a 2001 MY registered in 2001 and has covered 24000 miles, the head gasket was replaced by Brown & Gammons in November 2009 with an updated MLS one, together with replacement bottom rail etc. The issue that I need some help to resolve is as follows. If the car is left overnight a small amount of coolant pools on the bottom rear of the engine block roughly in the centre of the block above the exhaust connection. When the engine is started there is the smell of burning chemical which I assume is the OAT burning off? There is no indication of oil in the header tank or coolant in the oil. The level in the header tank has dropped very slightly and the coolant temperature gauge is steady at just below the centre line, coolant is circulating back into the header tank. There is no sign of a leak when the engine is up to temperature and I am unable to see or feel any leakage from the pipework etc. Does anyone else have experience of this? Is this a portent of a major engine failure? Any information would be greatly appreciated Thanks for your help |

| Hi, >bottom rear of the engine block roughly in the centre of the block above the exhaust connection. do you have the option to lift the car and check the coolant hoses and pipework from below the car ? Sounds like leaking coolant at the interconnection behind the engine or direct at the connection to the underfloor coolant pipes. HTH Dieter |
