MG MGF Technical - Coolant Leak?

I have just picked up a nice little MGF (to go with my MGA) and have a concern over a coolant leak. The weather has not been so forgiving so I am having a bit of a time inspecting the problem, specifically from the uderside.

What I notice is that the coolant level is dropping regularly. If I open the hood and shine a light (from the top) I can see what appears to be evidence of a leak down the block towards the rear of the engine. No leaks are apparent once the car is driven and parked, no puddles, nothing.

The car has been regularly serviced by Rover and had a new timing belt/waterpump and some hoses replaced at 40,000 km.

I think I can fix it if I know what to look for. Besides, the mechainc is far away and expensive!

Any comments would be greatly appreciated.

Early models had problems with the inlet manifold gasket - ours did this and the dealer changed the gasket to a modified type - simple job.

NOTE: I am not talking head gasket BUT of course that can not be ruled out.

Get it repaired immediately, otherwise you WILL be talking head gasket failure if it isn't already. A cooling system pressure test is the easiest way to find a leak. You can make a home made tester using a bicycle pump and an old expansion tank cap. Pressurise the system using this device to around 15psi and then look for leaks.
