MG MGF Technical - Close ratio box
Looking for a close ratio box for a MGF linked to a LSD diff. Are the cup car gearboxes suitable and are they available? Any assistance gratefully received Aubrey

Not sure of the ratios or the specifications of the MGF Cup racer's PG1 box ratios, but if you're building a racer, then yes, this ought to be suitable. What is your budget? Gearbox specialists such as Quaife offer a range of gear sets for the MGF, as well as LSDs. But they're not cheap - and of course, there is a small matter of shipping... Cheaper, second hand options are available, including CR gearboxes and Torsen type LSDs (these were fitted to Rovers T-series turbo engines, as found in the 820 Vitesse, 620ti and 220 Tomcat coupe)

I've often wondered about how the car would like a set of closer ratios, though I'm unlikely ever to do anything about it. I find on my 1.8i that 3rd & 4th do perfectly well for the last bit of Hangar Straight at Silverstone. Perhaps if they were slightly lower and 5th was much closer it would be a bit better - perhaps 10/12.5/15/17.5 mph/1000rpm for 2nd thru 5th would be good track ratios, but then you'd really need 6th for going to the track day on the motorway! Are those earlier gearboxes interchangeable with the F?

Hi the Rover 200 BRM used a close ratio box with a LSD maybe you could source one of those second hand. Dave Kar-Solutions
