MG MGF Technical - Brakes clatter

Thats it really. all four corners clatter on rough road surfaces, especially audible at low speed with top down. The brakes work fine with hardly any pedal movement and there is balanced wear on both pads(Standard MGR renewed with discs 45k miles ago) all round. The clatter disappears with even the lightest brake pressure on the worst surfaces. There is no lateral play but must be fore and aft, or up and down, play between pads and their fixings.
Has anyone found a similar issue and better still a cure? '96 MPi, Thanks.
