MG MGF Technical - Bonnet locked
Hi All, Tried to open the bonnet on my 1999 F to top up windscreen washer fluid, first time for about a month. I pulled the lever in the boot, but the bonnet stayed shut tight. Pulled a bit harder ( as much as I dare) and still no joy. There is still resistance so I don't think the cable has snapped. Is there a way to manually open the catch? I'm a bit worried because there is now slack in the cable and the bonnet may open when driving. Mike

Hi Mike, Get someone to push down on the bonnet while you VERY SLOWLY pull the bonnet opening lever. This should take the load off the latch, and thus releasing the bonnet. Once open,it looks like you're going to need to lub the cable and locking plate before you accidently snap the cable. You will find it rusted up at the lock plate just as it exits the outer sheath. hth willyphixitt

Mike, There is a safety catch which prevents the bonnet from opening fully, so your car should be safe to drive.

Managed to pop the bonnet using the long screw driver method. Trouble is, the cable has parted at the bonnet release end. I removed the two bolts that secure the catch, but still cannot gain access to the release mechanism. Any ideas would be welcome. Mike
