MG MGF Technical - Blowing Tail Light Fuse & Rear Fogs

My 99 MGF LE #1897 is blowing the fuse for the the left side tail light only. The turn signal, brake light and four way flashers are OK. I have replaced the tail light, checked everything that I can readily get at but I can't find the reason for blowing the fuse. Sometimes the fuse blows in a mile or two, sometimes it will go for weeks and be fine. Is there any smoking gun for any area to look at for shorts?
Also, I would like to utilize the rear fog lights that are in my new clear "Lexus" lights. I have the switch on the dash, but I can't find a wiring harness that would go to it. Were most MGF's pre-wired for rear fog lights? There is certainly a wire going to the rear light. I have a fuse for the rear fogs and it is good. The trail goes cold after that. Which countries use them as standard? Thanks for any help.

Hi Richard,

so I see LE #1897 really made it to the US ?
The last I heard of it was some time ago in an ebay advert from someone in Lippstadt, Germany.
Would be great is you could forward the VIN to me for the MGF Register.
To mgf [at]mgcc.de or http://www.mgfcar.de/vin/index.htm please.

Anyway, see here for the wiring of the rear fogs

They have allways been standard at all MGF.

Can't help much on the blowing fuse, though.
May be the wiring may help as a first step.

A link for the reference to the wire colour codes is on top of that page.

Hi,

Take a good look at the wiring where it passes up past the LH boot hinge, into the boot lid. F's are notorious for breaking the wires there, maybe the wire to the licence plate lamps, which is fused via the Lh tail lamp fuse, is bare and shorting out now and again.

Just a thought, have carried out many a repair in that area on these cars.

Thanks very much. I just noticed that the license plate light were connected on that side. I'm going to look at that carefully, as I found three shorts just on the center mounted brake light. I really appreciate the help. Quite a different learning curve from my MGA. Wish me luck.
