MG MGF Technical - Back in the Club

Picked up a 2000 (W) MGF today (replacement for an insurance write-off 2001(y). Done its first 70 miles bringing in back, seems in very good order. However a slightly panicing feeling is the engine fans did not kick in when I got home ? (temperature gauge in car was fine went up to a normal level I'd expect so didn't appear to be overheating). Should the fans have kicked in ? is there a way to check ?

When I had a quick look coolant was bumbling away nicely but engine did seem to be making a bit of a wheeze !....

Apologies, nervous of Herts.

Welcome back!
The radiator fan will default to on if you o/c the brown temp sensor connection, but the engine bay sensor is not always so direct. It relies on the ECU to switch on the fan; you might try playing a hairdrier on it while the engine is running. It is far less important than the radiator fan.
In the underbonnet fuse box FL3 does the engine bay fan and HRW, while F6 does the rad fan - well worth checking and upgrading to 20A if not already done.

Thanks , certainly look at the fuses. ANOTHER sinking feeling though (more serious now I think !). Its a steptronic and it has lost all accelaration power on 2 ocassions now(pedal to floor, nothing, like car is in Neutral, but engine is still trying...). Had to pull over, turn engine over and it comes back..... Both ocassions were in the first mile of a drive after a good lay off, so no chance to warm up. Taking it straight to my rover garage tomorrow morning but in the interim really worried ! Thanks Dan

Let us know the diagnosis - I don't know much about these 'boxes. I seem to recall though that they are sensitive to the oil used - have a look through the archives, there may be something more there.
