MG MGF Technical - Any tips for removing head in Situ
I thought that there may be some guys out there who have removed a VVC head with engine still in the car. If that is so are there any tips that could help me in doing the same. I have removed the cam belt covers and will begin removing the exhaust on Wednesday and thought that there may be some good do's and don'ts out there. Thanks in advance guys Clive

Tim and I have removed the MPI head in situ - and I am sure that the VVC is unlikely to hold anything more 'exciting' to the mix than what we encountered. The bottom line is that this is all fairly straightforward - with only access to certain bolts and studs making life difficult (the ones under the plenum are likely to be particularly entertaining!) I have heard it said that it is possible to remove these heads with the inlet side of things left bolted on, but I don't think that I would do that...

In the book they recommend fitting (3off) what look like liner clamps after removal of the head. The next line says remove head bolts and tools (liner clamps?) Why do we need to fit them in the first place???? Clive

Hi I have just removed the head on my VVC without removing the engine. Fairly "easy" process - maybe simple is better description! Mail me and I will send the details - they are quite long! The liner clamps can be substituted with some homemade alternatives. If you don't fit them and then turn the engine at all the cyclinders will move and then life gets difficult. If you lock up the flywheel and do not move the crank at all and are gentle you will probably get away without them. Regards Adrian

you don't need to remove the cam gear or cam belt rear cover as long as you make sure you've got to all the nuts The liner clamps are only needed if you are planning on rotating the crank at all during the process. but as you /ARE/ fitting a crank locking tool this should be no worry.
