MG MGF Technical - altenator

the red light stays on when starting up yet goes off at 4000rpm,but battery is not charging?,before this AA and used its quick start box to get it going,i noticed smoke /smell of burning from engine vents,any ideas,have replaced alternator!

Sounds like failed diode pack in the alternator. Once its off, does it stay off? no idea why a new alternator hasnt cured it.
