MG MGF Technical - Alarm/ Imobiliser trouble
| Hi The flob for the F is only working when it feels like it?(Which is not very often) You can unlock and lock the car by the key but even then the imobiliser has to be taken off when you turn the ignition on and thats getting very bad now too. I have tried to overide the alarm by using the EKA number and going through the method given in the car manual but after the last number the horn beeps to say this in incorrect? My local dealer is not very helpful except to say a new flob is about £90 but it might not be that or to reprogram the car is £50 but it might not be that or an ecu is about £500 and it might not even be that? Any ideas without me forking out a fortune and still wasting my money? Tony PS I have tried a new battery |

| When you fitted the new battery did you synchronize the fob to the car? You can pick a new fob up on Ebay relatively cheap, but you will need to get your dealer to program it. However, you say that the key code isn't working either. You don't say how old your F is but early ones were given out with the wrong key code. Have a look in the archives and it will tell you how to change the number - I think you increase the last couple of numbers each by one digit (check to make sure though). If you get it working with the key code then that will certainly point to a problem with the fob. |

You could always have the engine immobiliser bypassed.Best of British in the W Midlands have decoded two for me .You send them your MEMS unit and they will decode it.I have found them very helpful. Before my mems unit was decoded I would have to point my key fob in the direction of the 5AS black box,now I turn the ignition key and the engine starts. The cost for decoding including your postage costs is appx £40 Best of British, 265 Darlaston Rd, Darlaston, West Midlands, WS10 7TG 0121-526-5506 Regards, Simon |

| Hi Tony, I have had simiar trouble lately and got some helpful replies under the 'Key Fob Temperamental' thread in MGF Technical. I was coninually attempting to resynch the fob but it didn't improve the reliability at all. I found that extending the yellow wire under the passenger footwell and also cleaning the button contact points on the plate with metho has helped enormously. As well as doing those 2 things, it really does seem to work for me that I zap the unlock button with my right hand whilst resting the fob on my left hand - it seems to like the skin contact for some reason? The fob is still a bit temperamental but much better now! I know how frustrating this is especially when its fine for days at a time and then chucks a big wobbly! If you find out anything else that helps please post it. cheers and good luck, Ali |
