MG MGF Technical - ALARM STAYS OFF/IGNITION STAYS ON
My alarm went off last night twice and so I left it off. I started up next morning and then tried to turn off the engine and take the key out but the engine still carried on running even though I had the key fob in my hand ! I Had to stall to stop ! No part of the alarm system works, and various dashboard lights are staying on until I restart which is as per normal with all lights extingiushing. Problem repeats. All fuses appear OK but meantime I'm disconnecting battery to prevent discharge. Any ideas ?

You may well find that the power down restores normal service when you reconnect the battery. If not, (ex)dealer assistance will probably be wise.

If I re-connect the battery it seems the system has been memorized and is re-establised to it's previous status.

If the ignition switch was coming apart and shorting internally it might have been energising the ignition while locked, this would set off the alarm because of the voltage drop on the battery. Have a look at your ignition switch Tim. There might well also be some aspect of the alarm (in which I have no experience) which prevents it being set while it thinks the key is still in the ignition.
