MG MGF Technical - 2ND HGF
In April 2006 I had HGF and had the car repaired at a cost of almost £700. Just 3 months later I had yellow oil again and took it back to the garage who did the HG work. I was told it wasn't HGF and they did work on the pistons telling me there was a crack in one of the piston liners. I had this work done which cost me almost £900. Over the last three years I have spent on the ususal tyres, servicing MOT etc and more recently £200 on a new battery and then an alternator. Just days after having got it back from having the alternator replaced I have yellow oil again. It's a 2000 Steptronic which even though I love it to bits has cost me an absolute fortune! I am being told it isnt worth repairing this time. I am completely at a loss as to what to do. The mechanic that has looked at it and (I think) be really fair and honest with me - he could have just done the work and let me take my chances but he's explained things and the options available to me but said if it was his car he wouldnt waste his money. What does anybody think? Thanks Lydia

I suspect your mechanic thinks it's possible that whatever caused the first liner to crack has caused a repeat. The solution I'd suggest considering is to offer the car for sale in its current state, i.e. as 'in need of work' and giving details of what work you have done. From what I've seen on eBay, the amount you'll achieve will be considerably more than selling it after paying for a replacement engine to be fitted - which is probably the only way of guaranteeing a solution. Private buyers willing to do the spannering themselves will see the value as only £500 or so less than in faultless condition, due I think to the plentiful supply of secondhand engines from reputable breakers at low prices - the Steptronic version of the engine is the most common, and doesn't command the premium of a VVC engine.

Hi Bandit Thanks for your comments - sadly I was taking my car to be priced for a trade in and it blew up! I had to leave it behind and am now driving a renault megane. Convertable but still very much a compromise! Lydia
