MG MGB Technical - Will a MGA Distributor Drive Spindle Work in an MG
I have a NOS distributor drive gear spindle, 1G2062, which is listed to fit an MGA. Will the also work in an MGB GB engine? Thanks, Tony

Not according to the Parts Catalogue. Whilst it quotes that number for the 18G and GA i.e. 3-bearing it quotes a different number for the 5-bearing i.e. 18GB and later.

Thanks Paul that was what I found out when checking. What puzzled me was in the U.S.A. Moss MGA & MGB parts catalogues the spindle part number is the same. NA but is still listed as the same part. Tony

Can't say for certain, but the difference is likely that the 5brg one is machined more along the shaft length for clearance to the crank. That means it would supersede the early one for all engines in the parts list, but the early one might go clankety clunk in a later engine. It is known that machining these to be more slender gives slight but good results in some race applications, so you could try it and machine to suit if necessary. They tend to have big lumps of off-axis metal as originally made, causes timing scatter. FRM
