MG MGB Technical - What type water pump?
Hi, I've come over from the MGA site hoping to identify a water pump that I previously thought was MGA. I've been keeping a spare water pump for years as a replacement but I had a closer look at it the other day and found that its longer than my MGA pump - the length from pulley flange to base is about 10.5 cm. Everything else looks the same so if its not MGA there was a suggestion that it might be MGB. Can any sharp eyed MGB member identify it? With thanks John.

I have a couple of 18G/18GA pumps in the garage and it looks similar, I will check one this weekend. What is the diameter of the bit that goes round? This will be smaller on an 18G/GA pump than a later 5 bearing engine pump. John.

There are reputedly different pumps for the MGB and the wrong one is said to give inadequate cooling. However there are also long-nose and short-nose pumps for the five-bearing, both of which are correct. The long-nose needs a deep pulley and no spacer for the fan, and the short nose needs a shallow pulley and a spacer for the fan. In the past I also bought an alloy pump for a five-bearing which didn't even fit, even though the gasket sold with it did. One mounting hole needed extending sideways, and the boss on another needed grinding down for the original bolts to work.

John, I measured the dia of the impeller and its 7cm. Does this get me closer to ID?
