MG MGB Technical - Water Temp Gauge need repair

My MGTD is fitted with a 3-main MGB engine. My problem is the water temp portion of the original MGTD Water Temp/Oil Pressure gauge is not working as the needle rests at the low temp end of the temp range and remains there even when the engine is warm. The oil pressure portion seems to be okay.

I suspect that the problem is a leak in the copper tube connecting the sender to the gauge. My first question is:
1. In order to send the unit off for repair and to still be able to drive the car with the gauge removed I will have to plug both the oil pressure and water temp access points in the block and head. Would someone please be so kind and tell me the pipe thread size for these two access points.
2. Where is the best and competitively priced place to sent the gauge for repair?
3. I am pretty good backyard mechanic. Is it possible to repair the gauge myself by cannibalizing an aftermarket gauge, and if so, what gauge should I buy that would have the same size/design sensor bulb and wire wrapped copper tube?
