MG MGB Technical - Valve springs
I am rebuilding a head form a 1979 1800 engine, The valve springs were a single spring, not double. Springs are 1.99"tall,1.17" in dia. and the wire is .150" Is this normal for a 79 head, or have the double springs been replaced by a single spring? If so can someone tell if it is a heavy duty spring from the above measurements? Thanks Steve

Hi Steve Single springs from 1971 18v engines. I will measure a single spring and post. Unless you have a race spec head it is most probable the springs are standard. Piper sell some very heavy single springs for Race use with certain cams. Peter

For road use with the 3 1/2" stroke B series a single spring should be fine. Double springs are not about more force, they are there so if one spring is "surging" the other will be controlling the valve. Having said that I know someone who got valve bounce in reverse in an MGA :-)

Hi Steve new MGB single spring OE is 2.06" height, 0.858" ID, 1.16" OD, 0.151" coil. Peter

Quite frankly you can have springs that measure fine and are no good. You need to take them to an engine machine shop and have them checked for the correct tension at a specific compressed height. Mine looked good too, but wound up replacing all of them because the readings were all over the chart. Tom
