MG MGB Technical - Urgent help - oil filter part number

Hi,

As usual this year I've left it until the last minute before realising the MOT is due on the B. I managed to get it booked in for tomorrow morning, and since I haven't had a chance to change the engine oil yet either for a while have asked them to do that whilst it's in.

I know lots of people recommend the Volvo filter (understand it's a Mann manufactured unit) and I want to pick one up on the way to the garage tomorrow. Only problem is I don't know what part number to order! There's a Euro Car Parts dealer on the way to the garage (http://www.eurocarparts.com), if I know the exact model of Volvo the filter goes in or the part number I can pick one up. From some Googling I think it's a Mann W917 - can anyone verify?

Many thanks,
Tim

Tim,

The Mann W917 is what I use on my GK and 18V MG engines, and also what my 1995 Volvo 940 uses. Both of the MGs have the filter mounted with the dome up and the threads down.

Yes, Mann 917 which is Volvo part number 3517857-3. However two out of three of these have failed to seal initially on my 73 roadster, and chucked a lump of oil out on the first start making a bit of a mess. The rubber seal doesn't seem to be bonded into the filter as well as anything else I have used, and buckles up until oil pressure pushes it into place. Never had that problem with any other filter in 40 years. There are no tightening instructions with them, I only tighten another half turn past first contact, whereas Champion for example say 3/4 turn. Having said that the Volvo *is* better at retaining oil when inverted than Champion or Unipart, and a lot better than the Fram sold by at least one well-known MG source in the UK!

Many thanks, chaps. Have always used Champion GFE121 but the anti-drainback seems to have been getting much worse on these in recent years.

Cheers,
